Paradise Kiss (パラダイス・キス, Paradaisu Kisu?), abbreviated to "ParaKiss" by fans, is a 5 volume manga series, originally published in Shodensha's Zipper magazine, which has been adapted into a 12 episode anime series, produced by Aniplex and Studio Madhouse, and which was aired in Japan on Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block and on the anime television network, Animax, who have broadcast the series across its respective networks worldwide, including Japan, Southeast Asia and East Asia.
Written by popular mangaka Ai Yazawa, Paradise Kiss is the semi-sequel to her previous work, Gokinjo Monogatari, and several characters from that series are given cameos. This comic is widely read not only in Japan, but in many countries around the world. The Paradise Kiss manga has been translated from Japanese to at least nine different languages, Chinese (Taiwan and Hong Kong), Korean, French, Italian, Polish, Thai, German, Spanish and English. The English version is published by TOKYOPOP.
Story
Yukari Hayasaka lives the typical life of a Japanese high school senior. Her life is burdened with the pressures of cram school, impending entrance exams, and an idle love life. She is driven by the expectations of her mother, Tomoko, who desperately wants her daughter to be a top student at an acclaimed university. One day, while walking the streets with her attention on a copy of Catcher in the Rye, Yukari is accosted by a youth dressed in full-on punk attire. The youth, Arashi Nagase, screams "Bingo!" as he begins praising her beautiful features. Disturbed by his bizarre appearance, and not knowing anything about his intentions, Yukari tries to escape, but bumps into Isabella. She promptly faints, and is brought to the Paradise Kiss atelier.
Upon awakening in the studio, she is calmed by Miwako's angelic appearance and kind greeting. The trio of Miwako, Isabella, and Arashi explain that they are students at the fashion school Yazawa Arts, and that they are seeking a model for their entry in the school's annual fashion show. Yukari declines, finding the very idea to be a waste of time, and leaves in a huff. However, she accidentally leaves her student handbook behind..
As Yukari walks out of school, she is presented with a rose by a handsome man in a tuxedo. This man, George Koizumi, is the leader of "ParaKiss", and he has every intention of charming Yukari into the modelling position. Drawn by the allure of Paradise Kiss members' determination--as well as George's charisma--Yukari is quickly swept off her feet and into a surreal world of fashion and romance!
