nuYasha, full title InuYasha, A Feudal era Fairy Tale , is a Japanese shōnen adventure romantic comedy manga created by Rumiko Takahashi. The story tells of the adventures of Kagome Higurashi, who can travel back in time through a mysterious well, and the half-demon, InuYasha, along with their companions Miroku (a monk who accompanies Inuyasha to defeat the demon lord Naraku, to rid himself of the black hole in his hand), Sango (a demon slayer wanting revenge on Naraku for the death of her brother and village) and Shippo (an orphan fox demon). The whole group travels together, seeking to kill Naraku as revenge and gather all the shards of the sacred jewel (Shikon no Tama, which was broken accidentally by Kagome) to keep them out of the hands of demons.
The series is named after the main character, InuYasha. The name "InuYasha" literally means " dog demon". Inu (犬 is a Japanese word meaning "dog". Yasha (夜叉 is a Buddhism-related word meaning demon or demon warrior.
The story begins in Tokyo, Japan with a junior high-school girl named Kagome Higurashi, who, on her way to school, heads to the covered well on the family property (which happens to be a Shinto shrine). She does this to retrieve her cat, Buyo, from the well, since her brother was afraid to go inside. When she approaches the well a centipede demon bursts from the well and grabs her. The demon claims that Kagome possesses the Jewel of the Four Souls and attempts to seize it. When the demon is driven off, the very confused Kagome emerges in the Sengoku period of Japan. Kagome wanders into a colossal forest looking for landmarks that she may recognize. She spots the Sacred Tree off in the distance and proceeds to run towards it, where she finds Inuyasha, who is still sealed with an arrow to the tree. He is asleep. Villagers seize her and take her to a nearby village where she meets an old miko by the name of Kaede, who recognizes that Kagome is almost a mirror likeness for Kikyo , her elder sister who had died at the age of 17 and had her body burned with the Jewel of the Four Souls, taking it with her into the afterlife. Kaede relates the story of how, 50 years earlier, a han'yō named InuYasha had tried to steal the Jewel from Kikyo, mortally wounding her in the process, but Kikyo had managed to strike him with a magical arrow, pinning him into an enchanted sleep against a tree and thus retrieving the Jewel before she finally died. It is later shown that Inuyasha had a relationship with the priestess Kikyo and it was not him that tried to steal the jewel but Naraku, an evil character bent on destroying Kikyo, Inuyasha, and many other people. Inuyasha must fight his half brother Sesshomaru because he wants to kill Inuyasha for their father's sword, Tetsusaiga.
InuYasha is a reckless han'yō, the result of a relationship between a powerful dog demon lord and a beautiful human princess. Orphaned at a young age, and despised by both Yōkai and humans, InuYasha had a sad childhood. He is rejected by humans because of his yōkai side and looked down upon by yōkai as a "filthy half-breed" because his human blood supposedly taints his superior yōkai blood. Thus, before InuYasha met Kikyo, he found it very difficult to trust anyone, and even more to find anyone who accepted him as a han'yō.
He met Kikyo and started to attack her to get Jewel of the Four Souls to become a full yōkai. However, Kikyo, whom InuYasha developed feelings for, talked him into becoming human. Another han'yō, formerly a human known only as Onigumo, but now called Naraku, made them believe they betrayed each other. Because of Naraku's schemes, and their own lack of faith in each other, their relationship ended when InuYasha broke into Kikyo's village and stole the Jewel of the Four Souls. In defense of the village, and to keep him from escaping with the Jewel, Kikyo fired a Fuin no Ya at InuYasha, sealing him to the Goshinboku in an eternal enchanted sleep. Moments afterward, Kikyo collapses from a wound she received from Naraku -- though at first the viewer is lead to believe that InuYasha wounded her -- and dies within a few short moments. Part of her final instructions to her sister Kaede was to have the Jewel burned with her body so that it would travel to Hell with her.
50 years later, Inuyasha was released from the tree by Kagome Higurashi, the reincarnation of Kikyo from 500 years in the future, who unknowingly carried the Jewel of the Four Souls inside her body (this is due to Kikyo being burned with the Jewel, but also makes reference to Midoriko, the creator of the Jewel). When he was finished with Kumade Jōrō (Mistress Centipede), he tried to steal the Jewel but ends up with the Beads of Subjugation around his neck. When Kagome says "Sit" (おすわり, Osuwari?) his head plunges to the ground. Kagome accidentally shattered the Jewel when shooting at Shibugarasu trying to flee with it, and the shards were scattered around Japan. InuYasha, Kagome, and their friends then began the search for the shards of the Jewel of the Four Souls.
He is introduced as an antagonist when, upon his revival, he attempts to kill Kagome in order to take the Shikon Jewel. He becomes more civil as time progresses, losing some of his more "demonic" qualities and becoming much more human. He maintains a crass, blunt, rude attitude towards everyone except Kagome and Kikyo, and to a lesser degree the rest of his companions (with the possible exception of Shippo). He is brutaly honest when it comes to dealing with emotional hardships (as long as they are not his), and always tries to take the most direct route possible in solving any problem, which usually involves blowing something up or shredding it.
InuYasha is offended when someone calls him a dog or suggests that he is inferior to yōkai, due to his human parentage.
Kagome is the grand daughter of the keeper of Higurashi Shrine, a shintō shrine near Tokyo. On her fifteenth birthday, she is pulled into a well (The Bone Eater's Well) by a centipede yōkai (demon), known as the Mudake Jōrō (Mistress Centipede), and is taken into feudal Japan, specifically the Sengoku period. In the past, she finds what seems to be a sleeping hanyo (half demon) who is pinned to a tree by an arrow. She is captured and taken into the nearby village and is confronted by Kaede, the shrine maiden of the village. Kaede at first thinks that Kagome is a yōkai, due to her strange-looking modern clothing, but she changes her mind when she notices that Kagome bears an uncanny resemblance to her long dead sister, Kikyō.
That night, the centipede yōkai attacks the village, and Kagome flees into the forest where Inuyasha is pinned. This time, however, he is awake and calls her "Kikyō". When the centipede yōkai catches up to Kagome, the villagers unsuccessfully try to defeat it. When the centipede bites Kagome, the Shikon no Tama (The Jewel of the Four Souls) falls from her wound and is eaten by the centipede. Kaede realizes that Kagome is Kikyō's reincarnation, as the Shikon no Tama was burned with Kikyō's body 50 years ago. Inuyasha, the hanyō, then asks Kagome to remove the arrow so that he can slay the yōkai and recover the Jewel for himself. She does so, and Inuyasha defeats the yōkai, but then demands that she hand over the Jewel to him, for the Shikon no Tama has the power to grant anything that the user desires.
As Inuyasha advances on Kagome, Kaede magically summons kotodama no nenju (rosary beads; lit. "power of the spoken word" or "prayer beads, as some people call them) around his neck that binds him so that whenever Kagome says a certain command, Inuyasha is instantly forced to the ground. In the Japanese version the word is 'osuwari' (お座り, sit), and in the English versions "sit" or "sit, boy" are used. This is an intentional joke as Inuyasha is an inugami, and 'osuwari' in Japanese is a command that is generally given to domesticated dogs to make them sit, so basically a running gag. However, it should be noted that, in some cases, she has used the command in order to save his life. She uses "Sit, boy!" more often in the anime, though.
The day after their chance meeting, a yōkai-crow attacks and swallows the Jewel, forcing Kagome and Inuyasha to attempt to retrieve it together. During the battle, Kagome shoots an arrow at the crow, using a piece of its flesh (It's foot) to assure accuracy. The arrow strikes and shatters the Shikon no Tama into many shards ("Shikon no Kakera" that are scattered across Japan and even to worlds beyond.
Kagome then sets out with Inuyasha to recover the shards so that other yōkai cannot use it for malice (though Inuyasha consistently claims his true intention has always been to become a yōkai using the Jewel), occasionally returning to the modern era for supplies or because she and Inuyasha get angry at each other. On their journey they meet many people and pick up many friends and companions along the way.
The focus of the journeys of Kagome and her companions changes slightly as they learn about the presence of Naraku, an evil hanyō that has not only greatly disrupted the lives of each of Kagome's friends but also seeks the Shikon no Tama for himself.
He is a hōshi ( a Buddhist monk), who possesses a rather unusual curse. His right hand has a slowly expanding Kazāna (風穴, かざあな, "wind void"; "Wind Tunnel" in the English dub) that sucks in anything nearby if it's not kept covered by a cloth and strand of japa mala beads. This curse was placed on Miroku's grandfather by Naraku and passed down to him. Eventually, the curse will cause him to be sucked in as well, unless Naraku is defeated.
Miroku meets InuYasha and his friends after walking away from a town after cheating a rich man there out of some money. While bathing in a hot spring, he sees Kagome naked, also taking a bath. He discovers she has shards of the Shikon no Tama (The Jewel of the Four Souls) while staring at her breasts and takes them (the jewel shards) and her bike (which he somehow knows how to ride) with the help of his tanuki (raccoon dog spirit) friend, Hachi. InuYasha and Kagome catch up to him and InuYasha attacks him, but Miroku uses his Kazāna in return. Kagome, realizing that the monk will not harm humans, stands in its path and causes Miroku to quickly cover it with his prayer beads. Miroku explains his situation, and InuYasha reluctantly allows him to join them.
Despite his good looks and temperament, Miroku's worst vice (and best running joke) is lechery, specifically shameless flattery and occasional groping with varying subtlety. Miroku must have a child in order to have an heir by the time he may be killed by the curse, and thus finds it perfectly fine to offer the chance to many young women to bear his child. This later puts some strain on his blossoming relationship (which eventually culminates in a marriage proposal) with Sango, often ruining small romantic moods between them.
In fact, it was lechery that got Miroku's bloodline into trouble in the first place. His grandfather was fooled into "caring" for a young woman, who turned out to be Naraku in disguise. It was then that he received the Kazāna curse. Despite knowing this, Miroku continues his ways. As an ironic twist of fate, one episode of the anime lands Miroku in a similar situation where he woos a young woman who turns into an insectoid demon. His Kazāna suffers a dangerous rip before he destroys the demon, forcing him to seek medical attention.
Nonetheless, the monk mellows out as time goes on and proves to be a very valuable ally. He is very knowledgeable about yōkai, and is the secondary fighter of the team after InuYasha. Though quite possibly the most intelligent of the group, he often uses humor or lechery to lighten serious situations, especially if anyone is worried about him. Despite his lighthearted and lecherous exterior, it is clear he has an inner darkness (Shippō has been heard to comment that he 'never bought that holy man routine') and worries over his curse and the resulting death sentence that hangs over his head.
Sango is a highly skilled yōkai exterminator (妖怪退治屋, yōkai taijiya). She is a member of a group of exterminators trained to kill yōkai. Sango, like all other children of the village, had been training to master the art of yōkai extermination from a very young age. Her preferred weapon is a gigantic boomerang made of the bones of yōkai, called the Hiraikotsu.
Kirara is the nekomata companion of Sango, the yōkai exterminator (退治屋, taijiya) that hails from a mountain village of other exterminators. Despite her yōkai blood and appearance, she is fiercely loyal to Sango and her friends and has been in Sango's family for generations. She has taken a particular shine to Shippō, keeping the young kitsune company when her presence is not required in battle, and she has aided InuYasha on occasion by teaching him how to wield his sword, the Tessaiga. Kirara is a formidable opponent, and she displays her strength and agility on several occasions. She also seems to have an unusual resistance to most poison's but is still susceptible to Naraku's Miasma attack. She is also able to pass through certain kinds of barriers.
Kirara usually appears as a tiny and cute feline no larger than a kitten with white fur, various black markings, large red eyes, and two tails, but her true form is a large Saber toothed like yōkai-cat. She has long, saber fangs and the fire that wreaths her legs and tails. She is also able to fly in her larger form and can easily carry three people on her back.
It is strongly hinted at in the anime (but not in the manga) that Kirara, or one of her ancestors, was at one time the companion of Midoriko, creator of the Shikon no Tama (The Jewel of the Four Souls). As the taijiya village was built near the site of the legendary battle between Midoriko and the yōkai that nearly consumed her, this is a logical assumption.
He is a kitsune, a (yōkai-fox) who tags along with Kagome and InuYasha after they defeat the Thunder Brothers. At first, Shippō attacks InuYasha and Kagome in an effort to steal their shards of the Jewel of the Four Souls (Shikon no Tama). He wants to use them to become stronger so he can avenge his father's death at the hands of the Thunder Brothers. After InuYasha and Kagome hear Shippō's story, they help him fulfill his revenge and he becomes the first new member of the group. Shippō, unlike some yōkai, has no problem with humans, but InuYasha and Shippō always tease each other while Kagome acts like a combination of mother and sister to Shippō. Though young and rather naďve, he has a very good grasp of the emotions and motives of his companions, and has oddly accurate moments of insight. He wishes very much that Kagome and InuYasha would not fight, and when they do, he is right there trying to convince InuYasha to apologize for whatever he did, resulting in a quick bop to the noggin for the kitsune.
As a kitsune, his specialty is trickery. He has fooled with InuYasha in particular on a few occasions, once abandoning him on the side of a road with his robe trapped beneath a stone with a sutra on it, which he is unable to touch, one act among several that have garnered InuYasha's mild resentment. Shippō's illusions aren't always complete and don't always last for very long, leaving Shippo to face trouble from the people or yōkai he may be trying to deceive.
Kikyo was the shinto preistess entrusted by the Yōkai Taijiya(Demon Slayers) to guard and purify the fabled Jewel of the Four Souls (Shikon no Tama).
Kikyo slew many yōkai that tried to gain possession of the jewel; however, she could not force herself to kill Inuyasha, a han'yō who is half-human and half-Inu yōkai/Dog Demon. She felt as though InuYasha was idled from his kind, as she was with hers. On several occasions she would immoblize Inuyasha when he attempted to steal the jewel, and had brief conversations with him. Inuyasha had followed her for a long period of time. Soon they spent more time together, and the two of them began to have feelings of love and compassion for each other. Kikyo told Inuyasha that the Shikon Jewel could be used to make him completely human, as opposed to his original intention of becoming a full yōkai. Kikyo speculated that if the jewel were used to turn Inuyasha into a human, it would be purified and vanish, which would free Kikyo from her duty to protect the jewel and she could then live as a normal woman with Inuyasha. He agreed, believing this was the better option.
The following day, Kikyo arrived at the area where they had agreed to meet, but Inuyasha was not present. When she went out into a field to attempt to find him, she was attacked by Naraku, disguised as Inuyasha. She collapsed to the ground as he escaped with the jewel, proclaiming that he had "absolutely no intention of becoming human" and that the jewel needed to "absorb even more bitter blood", thus effectively framing Inuyasha for the evil deed. Kikyo limped back to the village in pain, only to find that the real Inuyasha, who was also tricked by Naraku in thinking that Kikyo wanted to kill him, had attacked the village and was escaping with the Shikon jewel.
Drawing on her last strength, Kikyo fired a sealing arrow (Fūin no Ya) at Inuyasha to seal him to the Sacred Time Tree (Goshinboku). She collapsed the instant after Inuyasha was sealed, and instructed her younger sister Kaede to burn the Shikon no Tama with her body to assure that none can exploit the terrible powers the jewel holds. With that, she died. In the anime (but not in the manga), this tragic fate of Kikyou was foretold through a curse laid by Tsubaki,(A powerful Miko) when she told Kikyo that "a priestess must abandon her heart to achieve power ... this includes love as well" and "You must extinguish love. You must never hold a man dear," or else she would "suffer an untimely death."
Sesshomaru is one of the sons of the powerful Inu no Taisho. Since Inu no Taisho is considered to be a daiyoukai (great youkai), Sesshomaru is a daiyoukai himself. He is mostly a calm and collected person who hardly shows any emotions and rarely laughs. He rarely smiles, and when he does, it's usually not a good thing; as once Jaken begged Sesshomaru to beat him rather than to smile because it was Sesshomaru�s smile that he feared most. Sesshomaru believes that struggle is the only way for survival and mostly throughout the series shows his contempt for Inuyasha, his half brother.
Sesshomaru's mother knows how to increase the power of the Tenseiga. She wears around her neck the Meidou-Seki that was given to her by Inu no Taisho. She uses it to summon a Hellhound that grabs Rin and Kohaku and jumps in the Meidou crescent that Sesshomaru created with Tenseiga. He follows after and kills it, freeing Rin and Kohaku. The three of them continue into Hell, however, soon Kohaku and Sesshomaru realize Rin is dead and can't be revived. Her body is stolen by the Master of Hell, whom Sesshomaru later defeats along with purifying the dead in Hell. Back in his mother's palace, Sesshomaru is lectured by his mother for the need to have a compassionate heart. She revives Rin with the Meidou-Seki but warns Rin can never be revived again with the Tenseiga since it can only revive a person once. She warns Kohaku he too can't be revived by the Tenseiga.
There was a man named Onigumo (鬼蜘蛛, おにぐも, "demon-spider", who was full of deceit and hatred for others. In the anime (and in the manga; he is the elderly man who gives Kikyo his top knot to be sent to Mount Hakurei in order to purify his soul) he tricked his bandit leader, Rasetsu into approaching Kikyō and attempt to obtain the Shikon no Tama, or Jewel of Four Souls; however, Onigumo did not warn him that with Kikyō, there was a han'yō named InuYasha. Rasetsu survived the encounter with InuYasha, lost an eye, and returns to camp annoyed to find that Onigumo has made off with his troops. Rasetsu finds Onigumo and his troops at an inn down the road celebrating their change in leadership. Rasetsu blows up the inn, but the charred body of Onigumo somehow manages to survive the blast. Rasetsu throws the barely-living Onigumo off a cliff. (This, however, does not explain the spider scar, as Onigumo had the scar before he met Rasetsu).
By either chance or fate, Onigumo barely survived and was found by Kikyō who slowly nursed him back to the point of being able to speak. Onigumo developed feelings for Kikyō, but knowing that he could not move for the rest of his life, he summoned countless male yōkai using his corrupted soul. He then had them devour his body in exchange for giving him a new body with which he could claim Kikyō and the Jewel of Four Souls. Thus the countless yōkai were bound together in a form with Onigumo serving as a connector. (In an anime special, it is implied that a spider-yōkai, which looked like a small replica of Naraku's spider form in the second movie, was the de facto leader of these yōkai.) This resulted in the part-human, part-yōkai Naraku..
